Dhyana-sloka 6

भीष्मद्रोणतटा जयद्रथजला गान्धारनीलोत्पला

शल्यग्राहवती कृपेण वहनी कर्णेन वेलाकुला ।

अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा दुर्योधनावर्तिनी

सोत्तीर्णा खलु पाण्डवै रणनदी कैवर्तकः केशवः ॥६॥

 

bhīṣmadroṇataṭā jayadrathajalā gāndhāranīlotpalā

śalyagrāhavatī kṛpeṇa vahanī karṇena velākulā |

aśvatthāmavikarṇaghoramakarā duryodhanāvartinī

sottīrṇā khalu pāṇḍavai raanadī kaivartakaḥ keśavaḥ ||6||

 

भीष्मद्रोणतटा 1/1 जयद्रथजला 1/1 गान्धारनीलोत्पला 1/1

शल्यग्राहवती 1/1 कृपेण 3/1 वहनी 1/1 कर्णेन 3/1 वेलाकुला 1/1

अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा 1/1 दुर्योधनावर्तिनी 1/1

सोत्तीर्णा 1/1 खलु 0 पाण्डवैः 3/3 रणनदी 1/1 कैवर्तकः 1/1 केशवः 1/1 ॥६॥

 

 

·       भीष्मद्रोणतटा [bhīṣmadroṇataṭā] = Bhīṣma and Droṇa as its banks = भीष्मद्रोणतटा (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   भीष्मः द्रोणः तटौ यस्याः सा भीष्मद्रोणतटा (116B)

·       जयद्रथजला [jayadrathajalā] = Jayadratha as its water = जयद्रथजला (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   जयद्रथः जलं यस्याः सा जयद्रथजला (116B)

o   जयद्रथ had a huge army, which is likened to water body. जयद्रथ married to दुःशाला, a sister of दुर्योधन.

·       गान्धारनीलोत्पला [gāndhāranīlotpalā] = Gāndhāra (Śakuni) as the blue lily = गान्धारनीलोत्पला (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   गान्धारः नीलोत्पलं यस्यां सा गान्धारनीलोत्पला (117B)

o   Blue lily is not lotus, thus tricky. It makes it difficult to cross.

·       शल्यग्राहवती [śalyagrāhavatī] = Śalya as the shark = शल्यग्राहवती (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   शल्यः एव ग्राहः (marine animal) शल्यग्राहः (KT) सः अस्याम् अस्ति शल्यग्राहवती ।

o   शल्य is a driver of कर्ण.

·       कृपेण [kṛpeṇa] = as Kṛpa = कृप (m.) + इत्थंभूते to वहनी 3/1

o   कृप’s sister, कृपी, is married to द्रोण, and अश्वत्थामन् is their son. कृप gives the speed to the river.

·       वहनी [vahanī] = the speed of the water’s flow = वहनी (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   वह् + ल्युट् + ङीप् ।

·       कर्णेन [karṇena] = by Karṇa = कर्ण (m.) + इत्थंभूते to वेला 3/1

·       वेलाकुला [velākulā] = one who has breakers = वेलाकुला (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   वेलया (by tide) आकुला (agitated) वेलाकुला (3T)

·       अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा [aśvatthāmavikarṇaghoramakarā] = its Aśvattāma and Vikarṇa as its killer whales = अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   अश्वत्थामः विकर्णः घोरौ मकरौ यस्यां सा अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा (117B)

o   विकर्ण is the youngest of the brothers of दुर्योधन.

·       दुर्योधनावर्तिनी [duryodhanāvartinī] = Duryodhana as its whirlpools = दुर्योधनावर्तिनी (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   दुर्योधनः एव आवर्तः दुर्योधनावर्तः (KT) सः अस्याम् अस्ति इति दुर्योधनावर्तिनी ।

·       सा [] = that = तद् (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

·       उत्तीर्णा [sottīrṇā] = crossed  = उत्तीर्णा (f.) + adj. to रणनदी 1/1

o   उद् + तॄ to cross + क्त (कर्मणि भूते) = उत्तीर्ण + टाप् (स्त्री)

·       खलु [khalu] = indeed = अव्ययम्

·       पाण्डवैः [pāṇḍavaiḥ] = by the Pāṇḍavas = पाण्डव (m.) + कर्तरि to सोत्तीर्णा 3/3

·       रणनदी [raṇanadī] = the river of battle = रणनदी (f.) + 1/1

o   रणम् एव नदी रणनदी (KT)

·       कैवर्तकः [kaivartakaḥ] = the boatman = कैवर्तक (m.) + 1/1

·       केशवः [keśavaḥ] = Kṛṣṇa. = केशव (m.) + 1/1

 

With Bhīṣma and Droṇa as its banks, Jayadratha as its water, Gāndhāra (Śakuni) as the blue lily, Śalya as the shark, Kṛpa as the speed of the water’s flow, karṇa as its breakers, Aśvattāma and Vikarṇa as its killer whales, and Duryodhana as its whirlpools, the river of battle was indeed crossed by the Pāṇḍavas, because the boatman was Kṛṣṇa.

शल्यग्राहवती 1/1 कृपेण 3/1 वहनी 1/1 कर्णेन 3/1 वेलाकुला 1/1

With Bhīṣma and Droṇa as its banks (भीष्मद्रोणतटा 1/1), Jayadratha as its water (जयद्रथजला 1/1), Gāndhāra (Śakuni) as the blue lily (गान्धारनीलोत्पला 1/1), Śalya as the shark (शल्यग्राहवती 1/1), Kṛpa as the speed of the water’s flow (कृपेण 3/1 वहनी 1/1), Karṇa as its breakers (कर्णेन 3/1 वेलाकुला 1/1), Aśvattāma and Vikarṇa as its killer whales (अश्वत्थामविकर्णघोरमकरा 1/1), and Duryodhana as its whirlpools (दुर्योधनावर्तिनी 1/1), the river of battle (रणनदी 1/1) was indeed (खलु 0) crossed (सोत्तीर्णा 1/1) by the Pāṇḍavas (पाण्डवैः 3/3), because the boatman (कैवर्तकः 1/1) was Kṛṣṇa (केशवः 1/1).
