1st Chapter 22nd Sloka

यावदेतान्निरीक्षेऽहं योद्धुकामानवस्थितान् ।

कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन् रणसमुद्यमे  ॥१.२२॥

 

yāvadetānnirīkṣe'haṃ yoddhukāmānavasthitān |

kairmayā saha yoddhavyamasmin raṇasamudyame  ||1.22||

 

यावत् ⁰ एतान् ^2/3 निरीक्षे ^I/1 अहम् ^1/1 योद्धुकामान् ^2/3 अवस्थितान् ^2/3 ।

कैः ^3/3 मया ^3/1 सह ⁰ योद्धव्यम् ^1/1 अस्मिन् ^7/1 रणसमुद्यमे ^7/1 ॥१.२२॥

 

·       यावत् [yāvat] = so that = अव्ययम्

·       एतान् [etān] = these = एतद् (pron. m.) + adj. to योद्धुकामान् 2/3

·       निरीक्षे [nirīkṣe] = I see = निर् + ईक्ष् to examine + लट्/कर्तरि/I/1

·       अहम् [aham] = I = अस्मद् (pron. m.) + कर्तरि to निरीक्षे 1/1

·       योद्धुकामान् [yoddhukāmān] = those who are desirous to fight = योद्धुकाम (m.) + कर्मणि to निरीक्षे 2/3

·       अवस्थितान् [avasthitān] = standing = अवस्थित (m.) + adj. to योद्धुकामान् 2/3

o   अव + स्था to stand+ क्त (कर्तरि) = अवस्थित

·       कैः [kaiḥ] = with whom = किम् (pron. m.) + सहतृतीया 3/3

·       मया [mayā] = by me = अस्मद् (pron. m) + कर्तरि of योद्धव्यम् 3/1

·       सह [saha] = with = अव्ययम्

·       योद्धव्यम् [yoddhavyam] = Battle should be done = योद्धव्य + कर्तरि to [भवति] 1/1

o   युध् + तव्य (भावे the meaning of the धातु itself, and the sense of necessity) = योद्धव्य

·       अस्मिन् [asmin] = in this = इदम् (pron. m.) + adj. to रणसमुद्यमे 7/1

·       रणसमुद्यमे [raṇasamudyame] = onset of battle = रणसमुद्यम (m.) + अधिकरणे to योद्धव्यम् 7/1

o   रणस्य (of the battle) समुद्यमः (onset) रणसमुद्यमः, तस्मिन्  (in that)।

 

I can view these people who have assembled here desirous of fighting, with whom I should fight at the onset of this war.

 

.. so that (यावत् ⁰) I (अहम् ^1/1) can view (निरीक्षे ^I/1) these people (एतान् ^2/3) who have assembled here (अवस्थितान् ^2/3) desirous of fighting (योद्धुकामान् ^2/3), with (सह ⁰) whom (कैः ^3/3) I (मया ^3/1) should fight (योद्धव्यम् ^1/1) at the onset of this war (अस्मिन् ^7/1 रणसमुद्यमे ^7/1).

 

Sentence 1: (continuing from the previous verse)

यावत् ⁰ अहम् ^1/1 एतान् ^2/3 अवस्थितान् ^2/3 योद्धुकामान् ^2/3 निरीक्षे ^I/1 ।

So that (यावत् ⁰) I (अहम् ^1/1) can examine (निरीक्षे ^I/1) these (एतान् ^2/3) standing (अवस्थितान् ^2/3) desirous to fight (योद्धुकामान् ^2/3).

 

Sentence 2: (and I can examine also)

कैः ^3/3 सह ⁰ मया ^3/1 योद्धव्यम् ^1/1 अस्मिन् ^7/1 रणसमुद्यमे ^7/1 ॥२२॥

With (सह ⁰) whom (कैः ^3/3) I should fight (मया ^3/1 योद्धव्यम् ^1/1) (this is impersonal voice) in this (अस्मिन् ^7/1) onset of battle (रणसमुद्यमे ^7/1).
