1st Chapter 4th Sloka

अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि ।

युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ॥१-४॥

atra śūrā maheṣvāsā bhīmārjunasamā yudhi |

yuyudhāno virāṭaśca drupadaśca mahārathaḥ  ||1-4||

 

अत्र ⁰ शूराः ^1/3 महेष्वासाः ^1/3 भीमार्जुनसमाः ^1/3 युधि ^7/1 ।

युयुधानः ^1/1 विराटः ^1/1 च ⁰ द्रुपदः ^1/1 च ⁰ महारथः ^1/1 ॥१-४॥

 

·       अत्र [atra] = here (in the army of Pāṇḍavas) = अव्ययम्

o   इदम् (this) + त्रल् (7^th case meaning)

·       शूराः [śūrāḥ] = experts = शूर (m.) + 1/3     

·       महेष्वासाः [maheṣvāsāḥ] = men of great bows = महेष्वास (m.) + 1/3

o   इषुः (arrow) अस्यते (is thrown) अस्मिन् (in which) इति इष्वासं धनुः (bow) । UT

o   महन्ति (great) धनूंषि (bows) येषां (whose) ते राजानः (kings) । 11B6

·       भीमार्जुनसमाः [bhīmārjunasamāḥ] = equal to Bhīma and Arjuna = भीमार्जुनसम (m.) + 1/3

o   भीमेन अर्जुनेन च समाः (equal) भीमार्जुनसमाः । पूर्वसदृशसमोनार्थकलहनिपुणमिश्रश्लक्ष्णैः २.१.३१। 3T

·       युधि [yudhi] = in battle = युध् (f.) + अधिकरणे 7/1       

·       युयुधानः [yuyudhānaḥ] = Yuyudhāna= युयुधान (m.) + 1/1    

·       विराटः [virāṭaḥ] = Virāṭa = विराट (m.) + 1/1

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       द्रुपदः [drupadaḥ] = King Drupada (father of Daupadī) = द्रुपद (m.) + 1/1

·       महारथः [mahārathaḥ ] = the one who is capable to fight and lead a great army = महारथ (m.) + 1/1
