5th Chapter 21st Sloka



बाह्यस्पर्शेष्वसक्तात्मा विन्दत्यात्मनि यत्सुखम् ।
स ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा सुखमक्षयमश्नुते ॥५.२१॥

bāhyasparśeṣvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yatsukham |
sa brahmayogayuktātmā sukhamakṣayamaśnute ||5.21||


बाह्यस्पर्शेषु 7/3 असक्तात्मा 1/1 विन्दति III/1 आत्मनि 7/1 यत् 1/1 सुखम् 1/1
सः 1/1 ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा 1/1 सुखम् 2/1 अक्षयम् 2/1 अश्नुते III/1 ॥५.२१॥


·         बाह्यस्पर्शेषु [bāhyasparśeṣu] = in the external (sense) objects that contact (the sense organs) = बाह्यस्पर्श (m.) + अधिकरणे (विषये) to असक्तात्मा 7/3
o   स्पृश्यन्ते इति स्पर्शाः (कर्मणि व्युत्पत्तिः)
o   बाह्याः च ते स्पर्शाः च बाह्यस्पर्शाः (KT), तेषु ।
·         असक्तात्मा [asaktātmā] = one whose mind is not attached = असक्तात्मन् (m.) + कर्तरि to विन्दति 1/1
·         विन्दति [vindati] = gains  = विन्द् (6P) to gain + लट्/कर्तरि/III/1
·         यत् [yat] = that which = यद् (pron. n.) + adjective to सुखम् 1/1
·         सुखम् [sukham] = happiness = सुख (n.) + कर्तरि to (भवति) 1/1
o   यत् सुखम् आत्मनि भवति, तत् सुखम् आसक्तात्मा विन्दति ।
·         सः [saḥ] = he = तद् (pron. n.) + adjective to ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा 1/1
·         ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा [brahmayogayuktātmā] = one whose mind is endowed with the knowledge of Brahman = ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मन् (pron. n.) + कर्तरि to अश्नुते 1/1
·         सुखम् [sukham] = happiness = सुख (n.) + कर्मणि to अश्नुते 2/1
·         अक्षयम् [akṣayam] = that does not wax and wane = अक्षय (n.) + adjective to सुखम् 2/1
·         अश्नुते [aśnute] = gains  = अश् (5A) to gain + लट्/कर्तरि/III/1


The one whose mind is not attached to the external (sense) objects that contact (the sense organs) gains that happiness, (fullness), which is in oneself. One whose mind is endowed with the knowledge of Brahman gains that happiness that does not wax and wane.

Sentence 1:
बाह्यस्पर्शेषु 7/3 असक्तात्मा 1/1 आत्मनि 7/1 यत् 1/1 सुखम् 1/1 विन्दति III/1
The one whose mind is not attached (असक्तात्मा 1/1) to the external (sense) objects that contact (the sense organs) (बाह्यस्पर्शेषु 7/3) gains (विन्दति III/1) that happiness (सुखम् 1/1), (fullness), which (यत् 1/1) is in oneself (आत्मनि 7/1).

Sentence 2:
सः 1/1 ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा 1/1 अक्षयम् 2/1 सुखम् 2/1 अश्नुते III/1 ॥५.२१॥
One (सः 1/1) whose mind is endowed with the knowledge of Brahman (ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा 1/1) gains (अश्नुते III/1) that happiness (सुखम् 2/1) that does not wax and wane (अक्षयम् 2/1).
