6th Chapter 18th Sloka



यदा विनियतं चित्तमात्मन्येवावतिष्ठते ।
निःस्पृहः सर्वकामेभ्यो युक्त इत्युच्यते तदा ॥६.१८॥

yadā viniyataṃ cittamātmanyevāvatiṣṭhate |
niḥspṛhaḥ sarvakāmebhyo yukta ityucyate tadā ||6.18||


यदा 0 विनियतम् 1/1 चित्तम् 1/1 आत्मनि 7/1 एव 0 अवतिष्ठते III/1
निःस्पृहः 1/1 सर्वकामेभ्यः 5/3 युक्तः 1/1 इति 0 उच्यते III/1 तदा 0 ॥६.१८॥


·         यदा [yadā] = when = अव्ययम्
·         विनियतम् [viniyatam] = that which has gained a certain composure = विनियत (n.) + adjective to चित्तम् 1/1
·         चित्तम् [cittam] = the mind = चित्त (n.) + कर्तरि to अवतिष्ठते 1/1
·         आत्मनि [ātmani] = in the self = आत्मन् (m.) + अधिकरणे to अवतिष्ठते 7/1
·         एव [eva] = alone = अव्ययम्
·         अवतिष्ठते [avatiṣṭhate] = remains = अव + स्था गतिनिवृत्तौ (1P) to remain + लट्/कर्तरि/III/1
·         निःस्पृहः [niḥspṛhaḥ] = one is free = निःस्पृह (m.) + adjective to युक्तः 1/1
·         सर्वकामेभ्यः [sarvakāmebhyaḥ] = from all the objects of desire = सर्वकाम (m.) + adjective to अपादाने 5/3
·         युक्तः [yuktaḥ] = ne who is accomplished = युक्त (m.) + कर्मणि to उच्यते 1/1
·         इति [iti] = as = अव्ययम्
·         उच्यते [ucyate] = is said = वच् परिभाषणे (2A) to say + लट्/कर्मणि/III/1
·         तदा [tadā] = then = अव्ययम्


When the mind has gained a certain composure (and) remains in the self alone, when one is free of longing from the objects (of desire), then (the person) is said (to be) one who is accomplished.

Sentence 1:
यदा 0 विनियतम् 1/1 चित्तम् 1/1 आत्मनि 7/1 एव 0 अवतिष्ठते III/1 सर्वकामेभ्यः 5/3 । (यदा 0) निःस्पृहः 1/1 (भवति III/1)। तदा 0 युक्तः 1/1 इति 0 उच्यते III/1 ॥६.१८॥
When (यदा 0) the mind (चित्तम् 1/1) has gained a certain composure (विनियतम् 1/1) (and) remains (अवतिष्ठते III/1) in the self (आत्मनि 7/1) alone (एव 0), when (यदा 0) one is (भवति III/1) free (निःस्पृहः 1/1) of longing from the objects (सर्वकामेभ्यः 5/3) (of desire), then (तदा 0) (the person) is said (उच्यते III/1) to be (इति 0) one who is accomplished (युक्तः 1/1).
