2nd Chapter 27th Sloka

जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च ।

तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥२.२७॥

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyurdhruvaṃ janma mṛtasya ca |

tasmādaparihārye:'rthe na tvaṃ śocitumarhasi ||2.27||

जातस्य ^6/1 हि ⁰ ध्रुवः ^1/1 मृत्युः ^1/1 ध्रुवम् ^1/1 जन्म ^1/1 मृतस्य ^6/1 च ⁰ ।

तस्मात् ^5/1 अपरिहार्ये ^7/1 अर्थे ^7/1 न ⁰ त्वम् ^1/1 शोचितुम् ⁰ अर्हसि ^II/1 ॥२.२७॥

·         जातस्य [jātasya] = for the one who is born = जात (m.) + 6/1

o   जन् (to be born) + क्त (agent in the past)

= जात

·         हि [hi] = indeed = अव्ययम्

·         ध्रुवः [dhruvaḥ] = certian = ध्रुव (m.) + 1/1

·         मृत्युः [mṛtyuḥ] = death = मृत्यु (m.) + 1/1

·         ध्रुवम् [dhruvam] = certian = ध्रुव (n.) + 1/1

·         जन्म [janma] = birth = जन्मन् (n.) + 1/1

·         मृतस्य [mṛtasya] = for the one who is dead = मृत (m.) + 6/1

o   मृ (to die) + क्त (agent in the past)

= मृत

·         च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·         तस्मात् [tasmāt] = therefore = तद् (pron. m.) + 5/1

·         अपरिहार्ये [aparihārye] = regerding what is not avoidable = अपरिहार्य (m.) + 7/1

o   परि + हृ to avoid + ण्यत् (object which can be … ed)

= परिहार्य

o   न परिहार्यः इति अपरिहार्यः । नञ्तत्पुरुषसमासः ।

·         अर्थे [arthe] = object = अर्थ (m.) + 7/1

·         न [na] = not = अव्ययम्

·         त्वम् [tvam] = you = युष्मद् (pron. m.) + कर्तरि to अर्हसि 1/1

·         शोचितुम् [śocitum] = to grieve = अव्ययम्

o   शुच् (to grieve) + तुम् (to infinitive)

·         अर्हसि [arhasi] = (you) deserve = अर्ह् (1P) to deserve + लट्/कर्तरि/II/1

Because, for that which is born, death is certain and for that which is dead, birth is certain, therefore, you should not grieve over that which cannot be altered.

Sentence 1:

जातस्य ^6/1 हि ⁰ मृत्युः ^1/1 ध्रुवः ^1/1

Because (हि ⁰) the death (मृत्युः ^1/1) of what is born (जातस्य ^6/1) is certain (ध्रुवः ^1/1).

Sentence 2:

मृतस्य ^6/1 च ⁰ जन्म ^1/1 ध्रुवम् ^1/1 ।

And (च ⁰) the birth (जन्म ^1/1) of what is dead (मृतस्य ^6/1) is certain (ध्रुवम् ^1/1).

Sentence 3:

तस्मात् ^5/1 अपरिहार्ये ^7/1 अर्थे ^7/1 त्वम् ^1/1 शोचितुम् ⁰ न ⁰ अर्हसि ^II/1 ॥२.२७॥

Therefore (तस्मात् ^5/1) regarding the object (अर्थे ^7/1) which is not avoidable (अपरिहार्ये ^7/1), you (त्वम् ^1/1) are not (न ⁰) entitle (अर्हसि ^II/1) to grieve (शोचितुम् ⁰).

तथा ⁰ च ⁰ सति ^7/1 –

जातस्य ^6/1 हि ⁰ लब्ध-जन्मनः ^6/1  ध्रुवः ^1/1 अव्यभिचारी ^1/1 मृत्युः ^1/1 मरणम् ^1/1, ध्रुवम् ^1/1 जन्म ^1/1 मृतस्य ^6/1 च ⁰ । तस्मात् ^5/1 अपरिहार्यः ^1/1 अयम् ^1/1 जन्म-मरण-लक्षणः ^1/1 अर्थः ^1/1। तस्मिन् ^7/1 अपरिहार्ये ^7/1 अर्थे ^7/1 न ⁰ त्वम् ^1/1 शोचितुम् ⁰ अर्हसि ^II/1॥
