6th Chapter 19th Sloka

यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता ।

योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मनः ॥६.१९॥

yathā dīpo nivātastho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā |

yogino yatacittasya yuñjato yogamātmanaḥ ||6.19||

यथा ⁰ दीपः ^1/1 निवातस्थः ^1/1 न ⁰ इङ्गते ^III/1 सा ^1/1 उपमा ^1/1 स्मृता ^1/1 ।

योगिनः ^6/1 यतचित्तस्य ^6/1 युञ्जतः ^6/1 योगम् ^2/1 आत्मनः ^6/1 ॥६.१९॥

·         यथा [yathā] = just as = अव्ययम्

·         दीपः [dīpaḥ] = lamp = दीप (m.) + 1/1

·         निवातस्थः [nivātasthaḥ] = protected from the wind = निवातस्थ + adj. to दीपः 1/1

·         न [na] = does not =  अव्ययम्

·         इङ्गते [iṅgate] = tremble = इङ्ग् (1U) to shake + लट्/कर्तरि/III/1

·         सा [sā] = this = तद् f. + adj. to उपमा 1/1

·         उपमा [upamā] = illustration = उपमा (f.) + 1/1

·         स्मृता [smṛtā] = is cited = स्मृता + S.C. to उपमा 1/1

·         योगिनः [yoginaḥ] = of the meditator = योगिन् m. + सम्बन्धे to यतचित्तस्य 6/1

·         यतचित्तस्य [yatacittasya] = for the composed mind = यतचित्त m. + सम्बन्धे to उपमा 6/1

यतं चित्तं यतचित्तम् (KT); or, यतं चित्तं यस्य सः (116B) (In this case, this is समानाधिकरण to योगिनः and युञ्जतः.

·         युञ्जतः [yuñjataḥ] = of one who practices = युञ्जत् m. + सम्बन्धे to यतचित्तस्य 6/1

·         योगम् [yogam] = contemplation = योग (m.) + कर्मणि to युञ्जतः 2/1

·         आत्मनः [ātmanaḥ] = of the self = आत्मन् (m.) + सम्बन्धे to योगम् 6/1

Just as a lamp, protected form the wind, does not tremble. This illustration is cited for the composed mind of the meditator who practices contemplatoin of the self.

Sentence 1:

निवातस्थः ^1/1 दीपः ^1/1 यथा ⁰ न ⁰ इङ्गते ^III/1, सा ^1/1 आत्मनः ^6/1 योगम् ^2/1 युञ्जतः ^6/1 योगिनः ^6/1 यतचित्तस्य ^6/1 उपमा ^1/1 स्मृता ^1/1 ॥६.१९॥

Just as (यथा ⁰) a lamp (दीपः ^1/1), protected form the wind (निवातस्थः ^1/1), does not (न ⁰) tremble (इङ्गते ^III/1). This (सा ^1/1) illustration (उपमा ^1/1) is cited (स्मृता ^1/1) for the composed mind (यतचित्तस्य ^6/1) of the meditator (योगिनः ^6/1) who practices (युञ्जतः ^6/1) contemplatoin (योगम् ^2/1) of the self (आत्मनः ^6/1).

(In this अन्वय, यतचित्त is KT, and युञ्जत् and योगिन् are in सम्बन्धेषष्ठी to यतचित्त.)

तस्य ^6/1 योगिनः ^6/1 समाहितम् ^1/1 यत् ^1/1 चित्तम् ^1/1 तस्य ^6/1 उपमा ^1/1 उच्यते ^III/1 --

यथा ⁰ दीपः ^1/1 प्रदीपः ^1/1 निवातस्थः ^1/1 निवाते ^7/1 वातवर्जिते ^7/1 देशे ^7/1 स्थितः ^1/1 न ⁰ इङ्गते ^III/1 न ⁰ चलति ^III/1, सा ^1/1 उपमा ^1/1 उपमीयते ^III/1 अनया ^3/1 इति ⁰ उपमा ^1/1 योगज्ञैः ^3/3 चित्तप्रचारदर्शिभिः ^3/3 स्मृता ^1/1 चिन्तिता ^1/1 । योगिनः ^6/1 यतचित्तस्य ^6/1 संयत-अन्तःकरणस्य ^6/1 युञ्जतः ^6/1 योगम् ^2/1 अनुतिष्ठतः ^6/1 आत्मनः ^6/1 समाधिम् ^2/1 अनुतिष्ठतः ^6/1 इत्यर्थः ^1/1॥
