द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते ।

सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्‍खान् दध्मुः पृथक् पृथक् ॥१-१८॥

 

drupado draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ pṛthivīpate |

saubhadraśca mahābāhuḥ śaṅ-khān dadhmuḥ pṛthak pṛthak ||1-18||

·       द्रुपदः [drupadaḥ] = Drupada = द्रुपद + कर्तरि of [दध्मुः] 1/1

·       द्रोपदेयाः [draupadeyāḥ] = Draupadeyas, five sons of Daupadī = द्रोपदेय + कर्तरि of [दध्मुः] 1/1

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       सर्वशः [sarvaśaḥ] = on all sides = अव्ययम्

·       पृथिवीपते [pṛthivīpate] = O King! = पृथिवीपति + सम्बोधने 1/1

o   पृथिव्याः (of the earth) पतिः (lord) पृथिवीपतिः । Address of धृतराष्ट्र

·       सौभद्रः [Saubhadraḥ] = Saubhadra, a son of Subhadrā, a wife of Arjuna = सौभद्र + कर्तरि of [दध्मुः] 1/1

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       महाबाहुः [mahābāhuḥ] = one who has mighty arms = महाबाहु + Adj. to सौभद्रः 1/1

·       शङ्खान् [śaṅkhān] = conches = शङ्ख + कर्मणि of [दध्मुः] 2/1

·       दध्मुः [dadhmuḥ] = blew = ध्मा (1P) to blow + लिट्/कर्तरि/III/3

·       पृथक् पृथक् [pṛthak pṛthak] = separately = अव्ययम्

॥१-१८॥          

 

O the ruler of earth (Dhṛtarāṣṭra)! King Drupada, the sons of Draupadī and the mighty armed son of Subhadrā (Abhimanyu), all blew their own conches.

 

O the ruler of earth (पृथिवीपते ^S/1) (Dhṛtarāṣṭra)! King Drupada (द्रुपदः ^1/1), the sons of Draupadī (द्रौपदेयाः ^1/3) and (च ⁰) the mighty armed (महाबाहुः ^1/1) son of Subhadrā (सौभद्रः ^1/1 च ⁰) (Abhimanyu), all (सर्वशः ⁰) blew (दध्मुः ^III/3) their own (पृथक् ⁰ पृथक्  ⁰) conches (शङ्खान् ^2/3).

काश्यः ^1/1 परमेष्वासः ^1/1 च ⁰,

शिखण्डी ^1/1 महारथः ^1/1 च ⁰,

धृष्टद्युम्नः ^1/1 च ⁰,

विराटः ^1/1 च ⁰,  

सात्यकिः ^1/1 अपराजितः ^1/1 च ⁰,

द्रुपदः ^1/1 च ⁰,

द्रौपदेयाः ^1/3 च ⁰,

सौभद्रः ^1/1 महाबाहुः ^1/1 च ⁰,

सर्वशः ⁰ पृथक् ⁰ पृथक्  ⁰ शङ्खान् ^2/3 दध्मुः ^III/3 । on all side those warriors blew their own conches separately.

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् ।

नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥१-१९॥

 

sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat |

nabhaśca pṛthivīṃ caiva tumulo vyanunādayan ||1-19||

 

सः ^1/1 घोषः ^1/1 धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् ^6/3 हृदयानि ^2/3 व्यदारयत् ^III/1 ।

नभः ^2/1 च ⁰ पृथिवीम् ^2/1 च ⁰ एव ⁰ तुमुलः ^1/1 व्यनुनादयन् ^1/1 ॥१-१९॥

 

·       सः [saḥ] = that = तद् (pron. M.) + adj. to घोषः 1/1

·       घोषः [ghoṣaḥ] = sound = घोष (m.) + कर्तरि to व्यदारयत् 1/1

·       धार्तरष्ट्राणाम् [dhārtaraṣṭrāṇām] = of the sons of Dṛtaraṣṭra = धार्तरष्ट्र (m.) + सम्बन्ध to हृदयानि 6/3

·       हृदयानि [hṛdayāni] = hearts = हृदय (n.) + कर्म of व्यदारयत् 2/3

·       व्यदारयत् [vyadārayat] = pierced = वि + दॄ (9P) to tear + णिच् (causative) + लङ्/कर्तरि/III/1

·       नभः [nabhaḥ] = sky = नभस् (n.) + कर्म of व्यनुनादयन् 2/1

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       पृथिवीम् [pṛthivīm] = earth = पृथिवी (f.) + कर्मणि of व्यनुनादयन् 2/1

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       एव [eva] = indeed = अव्ययम्

·       तुमुलः [tumulaḥ] = tremendous = तुमुल (m.) + adj. to घोषः 1/1

·       व्यनुनादयन् [vyanunādayan] = reverberating = व्यनुनादयत् (m.) + adj. to घोषः 1/1

o   वि + अनु + नद् + णिच् (causative) to cause to resound+ शतृँ (one which is doing …) = व्यनुनादयत् one which is causing to resound

॥१-१९॥

 

That terrible sound, reverberating throughout te earth and sky, pierced the very hearts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

 

That (सः ^1/1) terrible (तुमुलः ^1/1) sound (घोषः ^1/1), reverberating (व्यनुनादयन् ^1/1) throughout the earth (पृथिवीम् ^2/1 च ⁰ एव ⁰) and (च ⁰) sky (नभः ^2/1), pierced (व्यदारयत् ^III/1) the very hearts (हृदयानि ^2/3) of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (धार्तराष्ट्राणाम् ^6/3).

 

Main sentence:

सः ^1/1 तुमुलः ^1/1 घोषः ^1/1 धार्तरष्ट्राणाम् ^6/3 हृदयानि ^2/3 व्यदारयत् ^III/1 । That tremendous sound pierced the hearts of the sons of Dṛtaraṣṭra

 

Description of घोषः (the sound)

नभः ^2/1 च पृथिवीम् ^2/1 च एव व्यनुनादयन् ^1/1 । resounding between the sky and the earth
