13th Chapter 4th Sloka

ऋषिभिर्बहुधा गीतं छन्दोभिर्विविधैः पृथक् ।

ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैश्चैव हेतुमद्भिर्विनिश्चितैः ॥ १३.४ ॥

 

ṛṣibhirbahudhā gītaṃ chandobhirvividhaiḥ pṛthak |

brahmasūtrapadaiścaiva hetumadbhirviniścitaiḥ || 13.4 ||

 

ऋषिभिः ^3/3 बहुधा ⁰ गीतम् ^1/1 छन्दोभिः ^3/3 विविधैः ^3/3 पृथक् ⁰ ।

ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः ^3/3 च ⁰ एव ⁰ हेतुमद्भिः ^3/3 विनिश्चितैः ^3/3 ॥ १३.४ ॥

 

In many ways it is sung by the ṛṣis. It is also sung by the sentences of the Vedas as something that is varied and also as something that is distinct. And it is indeed explained by the sentences of the Veda, which reveal Brahman, without doubt, by implication, and with reasoning.

 

In many ways (बहुधा ⁰) it is sung (गीतम् ^1/1) by the ṛṣis (ऋषिभिः ^3/3).

It is also sung by the sentences of the Vedas (छन्दोभिः ^3/3) as something that is varied (विविधैः ^3/3) and also as something that is distinct (पृथक् ⁰).

And (च ⁰) it is indeed (एव ⁰) explained by the sentences of the Veda, which reveal Brahman (ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः ^3/3), without doubt (विनिश्चितैः ^3/3), by implication, and with reasoning (हेतुमद्भिः ^3/3).

 

·       ऋषिभिः [ṛṣibhiḥ] = by the ṛṣis = ऋषि (m.) + कर्तरि to गीतम् 3/3

·       बहुधा [bahudhā] = in many ways = अव्ययम्

o   धा 5.3.42, 5.4.20

·       गीतम् [gītam] = sung = गीत n. + कर्तरि to (भवति) 1/1

o   गै to sing + क्त = गा + त (6.1.45 आदेच उपदेशेऽशिति।) = गी + त

·       छन्दोभिः [chandobhiḥ] = by the sentences of the Vedas = छन्दस् (n.) + करणे to गीतम् 3/3

·       विविधैः [vividhaiḥ] = varied = adj. to छन्दोभिः 3/3

o   वि + धा + क्विप् = विविधा (f.) प्रकारः

·       पृथक् [pṛthak] = distinct = अव्ययम्

·       ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः [brahmasūtrapadaiḥ] = by sentences which reveal Brahman = करणे to गीतम् 3/3

o   ब्रह्मणः सूचकानि ब्रह्मसूत्राणि (6T), तानि पदानि ब्रह्मसूत्रपदानि (KT), तैः ।

·       च [ca] = and = अव्ययम्

·       एव [eva] = indeed = अव्ययम्

·       हेतुमद्भिः [hetumadbhiḥ] = that which have reasoning = हेतुमत् n. + adj. ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः 3/3

·       विनिश्चितैः [viniścitaiḥ] = without doubt = विनिश्चित n. + adj. ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः 3/3

o   वि + नि + चि to determine + क्त

 

अन्वयः

(तत् क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयाथात्म्यं) ऋषिभिः ^3/3 बहुधा ⁰ गीतम् ^1/1 । विविधैः ^3/3 छन्दोभिः ^3/3 पृथक् ⁰ (गीतम्)। हेतुमद्भिः ^3/3 विनिश्चितैः ^3/3 ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः ^3/3 च ⁰ एव ⁰ (गीतम्)॥ १३.४ ॥

 

 

Sentence 1:

In many ways (बहुधा ⁰) it is sung (गीतम् ^1/1) by the ṛṣis (ऋषिभिः ^3/3).

 

Sentence 2:

It is also sung by the sentences of the Vedas (छन्दोभिः ^3/3) as something that is varied (विविधैः ^3/3) and also as something that is distinct (पृथक् ⁰).

तत् क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयाथात्म्यं विवक्षितं स्तौति श्रोतृबुद्धिप्ररोचनार्थम् —

ऋषिभिर्बहुधा गीतं छन्दोभिर्विविधैः पृथक् ।

ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैश्चैव हेतुमद्भिर्विनिश्चितैः ॥ ४ ॥

ऋषिभिः वसिष्ठादिभिः बहुधा बहुप्रकारं गीतं कथितम् । छन्दोभिः छन्दांसि ऋगादीनि तैः छन्दोभिः विविधैः नानाभावैः नानाप्रकारैः पृथक् विवेकतः गीतम् । किञ्च, ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैश्च एव ब्रह्मणः सूचकानि वाक्यानि ब्रह्मसूत्राणि तैः (ब्रह्मसूत्रैः) पद्यते गम्यते ज्ञायते ब्रह्म इति तानि (ब्रह्मसूत्राणि) तानि पदानि उच्यन्ते (ब्रह्मसूत्रपदानि, KT) तैः (ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः) एव च क्षेत्रक्षेत्रज्ञयाथात्म्यम् ‘गीतम्’ इति अनुवर्तते । ‘आत्मेत्येवोपासीत’ (बृ. उ. १ । ४ । ७) इत्येवमादिभिः ब्रह्मसूत्रपदैः आत्मा ज्ञायते, हेतुमद्भिः युक्तियुक्तैः विनिश्चितैः निःसंशयरूपैः निश्चितप्रत्ययोत्पादकैः इत्यर्थः ॥ ४ ॥
